More than 60,000 residents of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic have applied for Russian citizenship, President Vadim Krasnoselsky told news outlet Izvestia.
Krasnoselsky reported that over 60,000 residents have submitted applications to obtain Russian citizenship through a simplified procedure. Nearly 500,000 people currently live in the republic, and 220,000 of them already hold Russian citizenship.
Simplified citizenship process
On May 16, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree setting special rules for admitting residents of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic to citizenship of the Russian Federation. The decree allows local residents to apply under a simplified procedure.
Krasnoselsky previously stated that Russian peacekeepers in the republic remain the only guarantee of peace. The Operational Group of Russian Forces in Transnistria, part of the Armed Forces of Russia, has been stationed in the region since the end of the Transnistrian conflict in 1992.
