The diabetes and obesity medication tirzepatide significantly reduces the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other severe cardiovascular complications in high-risk patients, according to a study published in the medical journal The BMJ.

Researchers found that patients taking tirzepatide alongside standard therapy had a 32 percent lower risk of major cardiovascular complications, including heart attack, stroke, or death, after one year compared to those taking sitagliptin, another blood-sugar-lowering medication.
The study analyzed health data from 52,971 patients in the United States. All participants had type 2 diabetes, excess body weight, and pre-existing cardiovascular conditions.
Key findings and health outcomes
In addition to the overall reduction in major cardiovascular events, the incidence of heart attacks specifically dropped by 33 percent among patients treated with tirzepatide. Researchers also recorded lower rates of severe infections requiring hospital admission and fewer deaths from any cause.
Based on their calculations, the authors reported that prescribing tirzepatide to approximately 70 high-risk patients for one year prevents one major cardiovascular event.

Tirzepatide is an injectable medication prescribed to manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes and to aid weight management in individuals living with obesity. It works by mimicking natural gut hormones that regulate insulin secretion and appetite. By contrast, sitagliptin is an established oral diabetes drug that increases insulin production by blocking the DPP-4 enzyme.

However, the authors noted that the findings support the potential for tirzepatide to provide clinical benefits for high-risk diabetes patients beyond controlling blood glucose levels and reducing body weight.
