Tesla has published video footage demonstrating safety crash tests for its new Cybercab robotaxi following the vehicle launch in Austin, Texas.

The video released on September 3 showcases a series of rigorous structural tests, detailing impacts from multiple angles as well as side and rear barrier collisions. The footage highlights the deployment of interior airbags and controlled frame deformation engineered to shield passengers during severe impacts.



The two-seater vehicle was created specifically for fully autonomous operation and features neither a steering wheel nor foot pedals. Tesla is an American electric vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Austin, where the company operates its primary factory and corporate headquarters.

Tesla stated that safety is built directly into the physical architecture of the vehicle rather than relying solely on software algorithms. The company claimed that the Cybercab chassis is engineered to absorb impact energy efficiently, stating that the vehicle was designed to become the safest car on the road.

Engineering driverless vehicle safety

Standard automotive crash testing evaluates how well a vehicle cabin maintains structural integrity and protects occupants during collisions. In traditional passenger cars, components such as the steering column and driver controls present potential impact hazards that require specialized airbag systems. By eliminating manual driving controls altogether, dedicated robotaxis allow engineers to reconfigure cabin geometry and optimize front and side crumple zones to absorb kinetic energy during a crash.

Automakers developing autonomous vehicles use physical crash testing alongside computer simulations to verify passive safety performance. Fully driverless vehicles rely on complex sensor arrays, cameras, and artificial intelligence models to navigate public roads without human input, making structural crashworthiness essential for passenger protection.

The release of the crash test video coincided with the official launch of the Cybercab in Austin on September 3. Tesla has presented the autonomous two-seater as a key model in its long-term plan to deploy dedicated robotaxis for commercial ride-hailing services.
