Greek Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou announced a major overhaul of rules governing private electrical energy networks following recent wildfires in Boeotia and Rethymno.
Responding to questions regarding the blazes, Papastavrou stated that the fire in Boeotia was directly connected to a private electricity network serving a local wind farm.
Papastavrou emphasized that the existing regulatory framework for private power networks was considered outdated based on evidence from recent cases. He noted that revising these regulations was an immediate priority for the ministry.
According to Papastavrou, the government aims to significantly tighten operational standards for private grids to close legislative and regulatory gaps exposed by recent official investigations and news reports. The announcement was reported by journalist Marina Demertzian.
Energy Infrastructure and Wildfire Risks in Greece
The Ministry of Environment and Energy oversees national energy policy, power infrastructure regulations, and environmental protection across Greece. In regional areas such as Boeotia in central Greece and Rethymno on the island of Crete, private energy developers operating wind farms frequently construct dedicated electrical distribution networks to link their generation facilities to the national grid.
Summer wildfires present persistent operational challenges for Greek authorities in both mainland regions and island provinces. Unmaintained infrastructure or electrical faults in rural power distribution networks can create ignition risks during dry weather conditions, prompting heightened state oversight of private utility assets.
Related Political and Agricultural Developments
The policy announcement coincides with several other developments reported by the agency. A statement from the political party associated with Maria Karystianou criticized media outlets for focusing on internal party resignations rather than systemic issues, while separate remarks from Papastavrou highlighted momentum toward implementing the Great Sea Interconnector project.

In agricultural policy, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis presented the new myAGRO mobile application for farmers, describing its official launch as a significant milestone for the primary economic sector.
