The Russian government has suspended the Russian-Hungarian agreement on visa-free travel for Hungarian citizens on diplomatic and official passports. The order is published on the official portal of legal information.

Such a decision was made “until Hungary eliminates its violations of obligations under the said agreement or until its termination”, follows from the document. The Russian Foreign Ministry will send the Hungarian side a notification of the decision.

An agreement between the governments of the two countries on visa-free travel on diplomatic and service passports was signed in Moscow on June 14, 2001. It, in particular, provided that citizens of Russia and Hungary who have diplomatic or service passports have the right to enter, exit, transit and stay in the territory of another state without visas for 90 days from the moment of their entry. The document stated that the parties could partially or completely suspend the document “in the interests of ensuring national security, protecting public order or for sanitary and hygienic reasons.”

At the end of February, the EU authorities obliged Russian diplomats to obtain visas, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yevgeny Ivanov reported. In particular, the issuance of visas on diplomatic passports is now being introduced.
