Spectators across London and parts of Britain turned to kitchen colanders to view a partial solar eclipse after protective glasses sold out in shops.
Frantic queues formed at retail stores prior to the celestial spectacle, forcing desperate members of the public to improvise household solutions when official equipment sold out days in advance.
Rather than looking directly into the sun, viewers held colanders with their backs turned toward the sun to project dozens of tiny eclipse images onto pavements, grass, and walls. Each small hole in the sieve acted as a pinhole camera, casting crescent-shaped patterns onto paper or nearby surfaces as the moon moved across the face of the sun.

In packed public spaces across the capital, including Brockwell Park in South London and Regent's Park, crowds gathered to watch the phenomenon indirectly. One elderly gentleman was filmed standing with his back to the sun in a crowded park, holding up a small colander with a piece of paper positioned behind the sieve to catch the projected crescents.

Brockwell Park, a popular 125-acre public park located between Brixton and Herne Hill in South London, offers elevated panoramic views across the city skyline. Open spaces like Regent's Park and Parliament Hill on Hampstead Heath are traditional gathering points for Londoners during major astronomical events.

The unusual technique was adopted across southern England. In Storrington, West Sussex, spectators projected the eclipse against outdoor walls. At Emirates Stadium in North London, football fans gathered for a pre-season friendly match between Arsenal FC and Italian club Como Calcio were seen using pieces of cardboard and colanders to observe the sun before kickoff.

Expert Guidance on Safe Eclipse Projection
Dr Megan Argo, an astrophysicist from the University of Lancashire, told the Daily Mail: "The safest way for the public to enjoy the eclipse is to view it indirectly."
"Standing beneath a leafy tree creates hundreds of tiny images of the Sun on the ground, which gradually change into crescents as the eclipse progresses," Dr Argo said. "The same effect works with a kitchen colander or a simple homemade pinhole camera."
The University of Lancashire, based in Preston, conducts scientific research in astrophysics and observational astronomy. Pinhole projection relies on light passing through a small aperture to create an inverted image on a viewing surface without requiring optical lenses.

The partial solar eclipse began shortly after 6:00 pm in parts of the United Kingdom. Maximum coverage occurred between roughly 7:05 pm and 7:13 pm depending on exact location, before the moon gradually moved away from the sun and the spectacle ended shortly after 8:00 pm.

Safety experts stressed that indirect viewing requires observers to keep their backs facing the sun at all times. The extraordinary event also prompted warnings of disruption as large crowds travelled to prime vantage points, raising concerns among authorities that distracted motorists might cause accidents by looking up at the sky while driving.
Astronomers and animal behavior experts note that the sudden dimming of sunlight during eclipses can disrupt the internal clocks of animals, including domestic pets, leading to temporary confusion and anxiety.

Stargazers who missed the event face a long wait for another deep eclipse visible from the region. The next comparably deep eclipse visible from the UK will not occur until 2050, while the next total solar eclipse visible from Britain is not expected until 2090.
