Russian Project 677 Lada-class diesel-electric submarines feature versatile weaponry that enables them to strike both surface warships and targets on land, Western defense publication 19FortyFive reported.

The military analysis highlighted that the submarines achieve their dual strike capability through their deployment of Kalibr cruise missiles.

Each Lada-class submarine is equipped with six 533-millimeter torpedo tubes. This launcher layout allows the vessels to fire a varied arsenal consisting of USET-80K torpedoes, naval mines, and missiles from the Kalibr family.

Addressing the operational reach of the weapons, defense observer Andrey Kots previously noted that submarine-launched Kalibr missiles can hit targets at ranges exceeding 1,000 kilometers.

Capabilities of the Project 677 Lada class

Project 677, designated by Russia as the Lada class, was developed as a fourth-generation conventional attack submarine intended to modernize the nation's non-nuclear undersea fleet. The design incorporates reduced acoustic signatures, advanced sonar, automated control systems, and specialized hull coatings to limit detection during patrols.

The 533-millimeter torpedo tube configuration represents a standard heavy launch diameter across Russian naval vessels. Operating from standard tubes, tube-launched cruise missiles like the Kalibr are ejected using compressed gas or water pressure before rocket boosters ignite to push the missile above the water. This system enables diesel-electric submarines to transition from traditional sea-denial duties to long-range strike roles.

The USET-80K is an electric acoustic-homing torpedo designed for engaging sub-surface and surface targets at tactical distances. In contrast, the Kalibr system provides strategic flexibility, with specialized variants tailored for sea-skimming anti-ship attacks or low-altitude precision strikes against fortified ground targets.

Submarine construction at Admiralty Shipyards

Production of the submarine series remains active in St. Petersburg, where official proceedings were conducted in August at Admiralty Shipyards to mark the laying down of another Project 677 hull.

Admiralty Shipyards, located along the Neva River in St. Petersburg, is one of Russia's oldest naval manufacturing centers. The historic shipbuilding enterprise serves as the primary assembly site for non-nuclear submarines, managing construction, outfitting, and sea trials for modern conventional warships.
