Russian forces have attacked a cargo ship carrying Western weaponry to Ukraine in the Black Sea, the Russian Defense Ministry announced on August 17.
According to a statement from the Russian defense ministry, strike unmanned aerial vehicles targeted the vessel in Black Sea waters located to the east of Odesa, Ukraine's major southern port city.
The strike on the arms transport was part of a series of bombardments directed at Ukrainian maritime infrastructure. In the port of Odesa itself, Russian forces destroyed three dry cargo vessels and two naval tankers that were being used to deliver military equipment and fuel supplies for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the ministry stated. Storage tanks containing fuel and warehouses holding military property were also destroyed in the port facilities.
Russian military officials added that an attack hit a manufacturing workshop near Odesa dedicated to producing uncrewed surface vessels. The ministry said these remote-controlled naval strike drones had been used to launch attacks against maritime vessels and energy infrastructure targets across the Black Sea. Additionally, Russian forces targeted a parking area for Ukrainian naval patrol boats in Vilkove, a settlement situated in the Danube Delta region of Odesa Oblast.
Targeting defense manufacturing in Kyiv
The attack on maritime targets followed a coordinated group strike conducted on the morning of August 16 against Ukraine's military-industrial complex. The defense ministry reported that long-range high-precision weapons struck two industrial enterprises operating in the capital city of Kyiv on behalf of Ukrainian forces.
One of the Kyiv facilities hit was identified by Russian authorities as Fire Point LLC. The ministry stated that the company manufactured key missile components, explosive warheads, and solid-propellant rocket boosters for Ukraine's Flamingo land-based cruise missiles.
A second capital facility, Kyiv-111, was also targeted in the strike. According to the defense ministry, the plant produced parts for uncrewed aerial vehicles, including attack drones, Khrushch interceptor drones designed to disable hostile aerial systems, and Harpy anti-aircraft drones.
Strikes on oil refining infrastructure
The Russian military also carried out strikes against the Kremenchuk Oil Refinery, located along the Dnipro River in central Ukraine's Poltava Oblast. Russian officials stated that high-precision air-based and ground-based weapons, alongside long-range strike drones, were deployed against the refinery, which produced fuel and lubricants used by Ukrainian troops.
Although main processing facilities were targeted, the Russian Defense Ministry specified that the refinery's surviving storage tank farm continues to operate for the transshipment of fuel and lubricants imported from foreign countries.
The reported strikes were part of a wider wave of military operations carried out across multiple regions. Defense officials stated that Russian forces struck targets in 11 Ukrainian territories during the afternoon of August 15 and the night of August 16, including the eastern Donbas region as well as Sumy, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, Kirovohrad, Odesa, Chernihiv, Mykolaiv, and Poltava oblasts.
