Russia does not take European Union statements regarding the possible resumption of diplomatic dialogue seriously because Brussels continues to ignore Moscow's interests, senior Russian Foreign Ministry official Vladislav Maslennikov told newspaper Izvestia.
Maslennikov, who serves as director of the department of European problems at the Russian Foreign Ministry, explained that recent discussions within the European Union have been limited to a surge of speculation regarding potential candidates for a negotiator role.
He said that judging by statements from official European Union representatives, the starting position of the Europeans has not undergone any changes, completely ignores the interests of Russia, and boils down to demands detached from reality directed at Moscow.
Maslennikov claimed that all European Union approaches regarding potential negotiations pursue three main objectives. He said Brussels seeks to provide the Armed Forces of Ukraine with a respite in combat operations, save the regime of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by any means necessary, and preserve Ukraine as a springboard for containing the Russian Federation.
Finnish mediation proposal
The foreign ministry official's comments come after Armando Mema, a Finnish politician and member of the Freedom Alliance party, proposed establishing better relations between Moscow and Brussels. Mema suggested that he could serve as a mediator for potential talks between Russia and the European Union.
Mema emphasized that officials across Europe have refused to select a single candidate for the mediator role because they are not genuinely interested in settling relations with the Russian Federation.
