Modern computer motherboards continue to feature legacy PS/2 ports for emergency access during driver crashes or USB failures, tech portal XDA reported.

Journalists at the site explained that motherboard manufacturers refuse to abandon the round connector on new computer hardware, even though the vast majority of personal computer users leave the port entirely unoccupied.

While peripheral devices such as keyboards and mice now connect almost exclusively through wired USB cables or wireless Bluetooth connections, the vintage PS/2 port maintains unique operational capabilities.

XDA noted that PS/2 connections function independently of standard USB controllers. As a result, a connected keyboard or mouse remains fully operational even if a computer experiences a sudden driver shutdown or a complete failure of all USB ports.

High security facilities and extreme overclocking

The old interface also serves a vital role in high-security environments. Specialists working at classified facilities continue to use PS/2 for its original purpose, as strict security protocols forbid connecting keyboards and mice via USB due to safety considerations.

Professional computer tuners also rely on the legacy standard. XDA reported that specialized equipment used by experts during extreme computer overclocking operates specifically through PS/2 connections. Overclocking involves forcing computer hardware components to run at higher speeds than certified by manufacturers.

First introduced by IBM in 1987 for its Personal System/2 line of computers, the PS/2 port is a six-pin mini-DIN connector designed for human interface devices. A computer motherboard acts as the main circuit board connecting a computer processor, memory, and expansion ports. Because PS/2 ports communicate directly with hardware microcontrollers rather than software drivers, they provide immediate input access without relying on operating system stability.

Windows performance and system services

In a separate technical review released in early August, writers at technology portal MakeUseOf compiled a list of system background processes that can significantly slow down personal computers running Microsoft Windows.

The MakeUseOf publication identified the built-in Windows Search feature, which regularly indexes files for fast retrieval, alongside specific operating system background services as key factors that reduce system performance.
