Pinofranqueado Wildfire Forces 700 Evacuations in Las Hurdes

A fierce wildfire near Pinofranqueado has forced 700 residents to evacuate 10 hamlets across Extremadura as emergency crews battle extreme flames.

Pinofranqueado Wildfire Forces 700 Evacuations in Las Hurdes

A fast-moving forest fire in Pinofranqueado, in Spain's western Extremadura region, forced the emergency evacuation of 700 residents on Tuesday night.

Regional authorities raised the emergency alert to level two after the blaze threatened ten remote hamlets and forced the relocation of 38 vulnerable care home residents to Plasencia.

The wildfire was first declared at approximately 2:30 p.m. local time on August 18. Preliminary investigations by emergency services indicate that the flames originated in a roadside ditch along the route connecting the villages of Robledo and Avellanar, driving a rapid and aggressive initial spread.

According to Abel Bautista, the Vice President of the Regional Government of Extremadura, extreme fire behavior kept the blaze beyond extinction capacity until past 9:00 p.m. Bautista explained that the wildfire effectively generated its own weather system, creating localized winds and extreme temperatures that blocked crews from undertaking direct attacks during most of the afternoon, except for brief interventions on its eastern and western flanks.

Evacuations and Military Deployment

The rapid escalation of the fire prompted authorities to order the preventive evacuation of ten hamlets, known locally as alquerías. Six of the evacuated settlements belong to the municipality of Pinofranqueado, while four fall within Nuñomoral, affecting a total of 700 people.

The most sensitive phase of the operation involved El Cottolengo care home, where emergency teams evacuated 38 residents with high vulnerability needs. The residents were transferred to the city of Plasencia, where they were accommodated between a local socio-sanitary center and facilities provided by the Bishopric of Plasencia.

To manage the crisis, regional officials activated level two of the Infoex forest fire plan and operational situation two of the Infocae emergency plan due to the need for external resources. Spain's Military Emergencies Unit was dispatched to reinforce operations with two battalions of 50 troops each. Operating in continuous rotational shifts, the military personnel are supported by heavy water tenders and aerial drones for nighttime reconnaissance.

Night Conditions and Morning Strategy

Around 150 emergency personnel remained on the ground overnight, focusing their efforts primarily on the head of the fire and around the Cerezal area, where flames were advancing rapidly downhill toward Nuñomoral.

Bautista noted that overnight conditions might provide a crucial window of opportunity for firefighting crews before sunrise. A drop in ambient temperatures combined with a forecast rise in relative humidity levels of up to 85 percent is expected to help slow the flame spread and aid containment efforts on the perimeter.

Starting at first light, a major reinforcement package including 26 aircraft and more than 200 ground firefighters will join the operation to launch an intensified attack against the blaze.

Regarding potential further action, Bautista stated that while additional evacuations cannot be ruled out, none are currently anticipated. He praised local residents for their exemplary conduct during the evacuations and commended the coordinated work of security forces managing the emergency.

Background on Las Hurdes and Emergency Response

Pinofranqueado and Nuñomoral are municipalities located within Las Hurdes, a mountainous comarca in northern Extremadura, Spain, known for its dense pine forests, steep valleys, and small rural hamlets called alquerías. The area's rugged geography and dense vegetation frequently present severe challenges for emergency responders during summer wildfire outbreaks.

In Extremadura, a level two emergency under the Infoex regional firefighting plan is triggered when a forest fire threatens populated areas or essential infrastructure, requiring regional and national emergency resources beyond local municipality capabilities.
