Peter Cullen, voice of Optimus Prime, dies aged 85

Canadian actor Peter Cullen, best known as the iconic voice of Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise, died on Wednesday at the age of 85.

Cullen passed away at his home in Los Angeles, according to a statement given by his talent agent to entertainment news outlet TMZ. A cause of death has not been disclosed.

The veteran voice actor famously brought the heroic leader of the Autobots to life, providing the voice for Optimus Prime in the original 1980s Transformers animated television series as well as in the live-action feature films directed by Michael Bay.

Beyond his legendary work on Transformers, Cullen voiced numerous famous characters throughout his decade-spanning career. He was the voice of Eeyore the donkey in Winnie the Pooh, provided vocal effects for the alien creature in the 1987 action film Predator, voiced Monterey Jack in Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, played KARR in Knight Rider, and voiced Mario in the original Donkey Kong animated series in the 1980s.

Tributes and family statement

In a statement released following his death, Cullen's family confirmed that he passed away peacefully surrounded by those closest to him. They added that he would remain forever in the hearts of his family, friends, and countless admirers across the globe.

His family asked fans and supporters to honor his memory by offering acts of service within their local communities and guiding others with compassion, integrity, and faith. They also urged people to remember his personal motto, encouraging everyone to remain strong enough to be gentle.

A career built on iconic voices

Born in Montreal, Quebec, Cullen became one of the most recognizable voice actors in modern entertainment. His deep, authoritative baritone for Optimus Prime was inspired by his older brother, a military veteran, bringing warmth and gravity to a character that defined childhood television for generations of viewers.

The Transformers franchise originated as a popular toy line and animated series before expanding into a multi-billion-dollar global film empire. Cullen's performances across animated television, video games, and Hollywood blockbusters earned him widespread acclaim among animation fans and industry peers alike.
