Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is evaluating political fallout following recent border events in Ceuta while vacationing at La Mareta. Columnist Jesús Rivasés reported that Sánchez expects to recover lost support through upcoming political disputes over the distribution of minors across the peninsula.
Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stated that the situation in Ceuta is resolved and described the resolution as a success for the Spanish government. Rivasés argued that the incident was a geopolitical event rather than a routine migration issue, leaving international prestige damaged.
Prior to the border situation, Sánchez proposed a climate pact following widespread fires across the country. According to Rivasés, the Prime Minister announced the proposal without holding prior discussions with opposition leaders or defining core content.
Political Disputes and Regional Rejection
The proposed distribution of young migrants across Spain is expected to create conflict between the People's Party and Vox. Meanwhile, regional parties in Catalonia and the Basque Country, including Junts and Bildu, have stated their opposition to taking in transferred minors.
Rivasés added that Salvador Illa and the Socialists' Party of Catalonia have maintained a low profile regarding the regional placement plan. He also noted that the developments in Ceuta could influence European politics by strengthening figures such as Marine Le Pen in France and Giorgia Meloni in Italy.
Comparing the administration's strategy to the film character Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark, Rivasés wrote that Sánchez relies on improvising along the way to remain in power. Pollsters Tezanos and Iván Redondo were also cited regarding political sentiment around the administration.
