Greece's main opposition party PASOK has accused the government of hypocrisy over the death of Giorgos Mazonakis, demanding immediate answers from health officials.
In an official statement, the social democratic party targeted Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis for blaming the female doctor charged in connection with the fatal case.
Georgiadis previously described the accused physician as a fraud who intentionally hid medical machinery from state inspectors during official oversight visits.
PASOK rejected the minister's explanation, saying his comments were an obvious attempt to conceal the Health Ministry's failure to supervise private healthcare facilities.
The opposition party stated that the government had turned a blind eye, tolerated, and frequently encouraged such problematic practices within the private medical sector.
Political Criticism Over Medical Oversight
According to PASOK, former government officials had previously promoted the accused doctor at an official industry conference held in 2023.
The party highlighted that former Health Minister Vasilis Kikilias, who was serving as Tourism Minister at the time, and former Health Minister Thanos Plevris had both praised her at the event as a super-scientist.
During that 2023 conference, the accused physician presented a new human body detoxification machine in her possession, which PASOK identified as the same device Georgiadis claimed was hidden from inspectors.
PASOK noted that the doctor informed Plevris, Kikilias, and Athens Medical Association president Giorgos Patoulis, who sponsored the conference, about the device's existence.

PASOK, short for the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, is one of the principal opposition parties in Greece and frequently scrutinizes public administration and healthcare policy.
In Greece, the Ministry of Health oversees medical licensing and private clinic inspections, working alongside regional professional bodies such as the Athens Medical Association to maintain clinical standards.

The opposition party also asked what relationship government figures shared with the physician and questioned whether Plevris was unaware of her services, noting that he had founded a professional association alongside the two accused doctors in 2012.
Concluding its statement, PASOK declared that government hypocrisy has its limits and reiterated its call for immediate answers regarding state responsibility in the case.
