Former HGTV star Nicole Curtis and her business Detroit Renovations LLC face a civil nuisance abatement lawsuit from the City of Detroit over a long-neglected house. The legal fight concerns a property owned by Curtis's company since 2021 that is not considered safe, according to the lawsuit.
The 49-year-old host of Rehab Addict responded to the allegations on Facebook earlier this week. Curtis told her one million followers that saving old houses is a passion second only to being a mother, but noted that her career built a list of enemies alongside global recognition.
"I've been sued, blackmailed, extorted, betrayed, you name it and not just by the usual suspects, but by 'friends' and loved ones that I trusted with my soul," Curtis wrote.
Curtis added that the grief of betrayal builds a person back up rather than fulfilling the intentions of enemies. She stated that she had two full crews starting work at 7am in Detroit to protect historic properties from flippers and demolition.
"Not out to make a buck, not out to make a name for myself, not out to rob and pillage (as some say about me), just out to save historic homes from being demolished and/or ruined by flippers," Curtis wrote.
"So, I'm just continuing being me unapologetically Nicole Curtis - the mom that prefers under the radar, hiding in plain sight, working on an old house," she added.
City of Detroit Legal Complaint
The lawsuit brought by the City of Detroit alleges that the home remained a community danger despite a 2021 order mandating renovations. According to the filing, the owners failed to make required repairs, leading to ongoing code violations such as structural decay and accumulated garbage.
City officials are asking the court to order that the property be fixed and that all violation fines be paid in full.
Previous Show Cancelation
The new legal battle is unrelated to the cancelation of Curtis's television show Rehab Addict. The former TV star, a native of Lake Orion, Michigan, was pulled off the air after she was recorded using a racial epithet during production.
A video clip published by Radar showed Curtis using the N-word while filming her series. Curtis previously claimed earlier this year that the epithet was an accidental slip of the tongue.
Speaking on The Breakfast Club radio show in March, Curtis told hosts Charlamagne Tha God, DJ Envy and Jess Hilarious that she regularly uses terms like "fart digger" and "fart knocker," which she said resulted in the on-camera slip.
