Emergency officials have warned residents of the Moscow region that temperatures could drop to minus two degrees Celsius overnight and on Wednesday morning.
The press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations announced that weather conditions between minus two and zero degrees Celsius are expected in specific districts across the region during the early hours of September 30.
The Moscow region, also known as Podmoskovye, is an administrative territory in western Russia that completely surrounds the national capital of Moscow. The Ministry of Emergency Situations is the federal executive body in Russia responsible for emergency response, civil defense, and fire protection services nationwide.
Increased Fire Hazards from Heating
Alongside the freeze alert, emergency services cautioned that falling autumn temperatures significantly elevate the risk of residential fires. Officials warned that house fires frequently increase during sudden cold snaps because of safety violations while operating electrical heaters and domestic gas equipment.
In response to the heightened risk, the ministry urged residents across the region to remain attentive and exercise extra caution in their homes. Authorities specifically warned against using faulty appliances or home-made electrical heaters, which lack standard thermal safeguards.
Emergency officials also reminded citizens that leaving electrical devices plugged in and unattended for long periods presents a serious fire hazard. They further advised against plugging multiple appliances into a single outlet using a triple adapter, and warned residents not to place heating equipment near flammable materials or fabrics.
The ministry instructed residents to monitor their heating devices closely while in use. If any appliance or power plug becomes excessively hot during operation, householders must immediately disconnect the equipment from the electrical socket.
Coldest Overnight Temperatures Since Spring
The latest weather advisory comes after the region recorded its coldest night since May. Moscow and its surrounding territory experienced an abrupt drop in temperatures overnight prior to the official warning from emergency services.
Late September routinely marks the arrival of seasonal frosts in central Russia, with temperatures dropping toward sub-zero levels before the widespread start of central municipal heating. During these seasonal transitions, residential electricity usage often surges as households rely on space heaters to maintain indoor temperatures.
