Russian television personality Vladimir Sulutskov, who became the subject of a viral internet meme, has died at the age of 51 in Altai Krai. Sulutskov, who was also known by the moniker Vladimir Zheleznodorozhnik, or Vladimir the Railwayman, achieved widespread online recognition following a television appearance in Russia. Altai Krai is a federal subject situated in southern Siberia, near the border with Kazakhstan.

Administrators of Sulutskov's official channel on Telegram, the widely used messaging application, announced his death on Wednesday, August 19. The post stated that Vladimir was no longer alive, describing the event as such news. The channel managers added that the account will be sold to raise funds for his mother, noting that Sulutskov was the only son in his family.
Uncertainty surrounds cause of death
No official cause of death was provided in the Telegram announcement. When asked for further details by the Russian online news publication Lenta.ru, the channel administrator declined to make any comment.
However, the news outlet Shot claimed that the former contestant died while participating in Russia's special military operation, the official term used by Russian authorities for the conflict in Ukraine. According to Shot, the 50-year-old native of Kulunda, an administrative district center in Altai Krai, enlisted in March of this year. Shot added that shortly before his death, Sulutskov called his mother to tell her he was heading to the front lines.
Viral rise from matchmaking show
Sulutskov first came to public attention in 2018 when he appeared on Let's Get Married!, a long-running daytime matchmaking program broadcast on Channel One, Russia's major state-owned television network. On the show, Sulutskov was rejected by a female contestant whom he had chosen during the final segment of the broadcast.
Reacting to the rejection on camera, Sulutskov commented that things were bad, bad and did not matter, and added that his affairs were in a very bad state. A video clip of his response resurfaced in 2024 and quickly evolved into a widely shared internet meme across social media platforms in Russia, used by users to express humorous resignation in difficult situations.
