Thirteen-year-old Peruvian musical prodigy Mauro Lionel Malca Peñaranda will perform a benefit concert titled Solo clásicos y premiados at Lima's Teatro Segura on September 13.
The performance will benefit Fundación Lima, a municipal charitable foundation operating in Peru's capital, as the young artist presents a selection of his classical compositions and award-winning musical works.
Mauro Lionel, who has already composed more than 200 original musical pieces, is widely recognized by music experts in Peru as a child genius. Tickets for the upcoming performance at the historic city-center theater are being sold through Ticketmaster.

Record-breaking performance at Gran Teatro Nacional
The September event follows his previous major show on March 8, when he presented a concert titled Solo clásicos at the Gran Teatro Nacional in San Borja, Lima. Performing before a packed venue, Mauro Lionel directed a 25-person orchestra through 20 of his original compositions and received a sustained ovation from the audience.
The venue, which serves as Peru's premier national theater complex, hosted what was Mauro Lionel's eighth public concert. During the performance, he conducted a 35-minute original symphony entirely from memory.
That concert marked three personal records for the young musician. He set records for the longest duration conducting an orchestra from memory performing original works, the highest cumulative number of original works premiered in public by a minor, and became the youngest artist to present a solo show at the Gran Teatro Nacional.
Early career and debut at El Olivar
Mauro Lionel reflected on his career during an interview on a Saturday afternoon at El Olivar park in San Isidro, Lima, accompanied by reporter Gabriel Ruiz Ortega of La República. The park, filled with children playing and newlyweds posing for photographs, holds personal significance for the young composer as both a place of recreation and the site of his musical debut.
On May 4, 2023, at the age of 10, he gave his very first public concert in the auditorium of the Library of the Municipality of San Isidro. Titled Rapsodia en El Olivar, the concert launched his public performing career within the historic olive grove district.
El Olivar, situated in Lima's financial district of San Isidro, features centuries-old olive trees originally planted during the colonial era, making its municipal library auditorium a prominent local cultural landmark.

International recognition in London
Mauro Lionel achieved international acclaim in 2025 at the Global Child Prodigy Awards held in London, United Kingdom. He was selected as one of the top 100 child prodigies in the world during the global ceremony.
Within the music category, which honored 20 young individuals comprising instrumental performers and dancers, Mauro Lionel was the only composer recognized among the entire group.
The Global Child Prodigy Awards is an international initiative headquartered in the United Kingdom that identifies and honors exceptional young talent across disciplines including music, arts, science, and athletics.
Discovery of absolute pitch and childhood composition
Mauro Lionel began playing music at two years old after receiving a toy piano as a gift from his grandmother. His parents, Guillermo Malca and Ivonne Peñaranda, noticed that unlike other children who abandoned the toy after a few minutes, Mauro spent extended hours experimenting with the keys.
His parents recognized his unusual connection to music, despite classical music not being a major presence in their household. At age four, they enrolled him at the Crescendo music academy in Lima.
During his second class at the academy, his teacher discovered that Mauro possessed absolute pitch, the rare natural ability to identify any musical note without a reference tone. Mauro treated the gift as a passionate game, prompting his parents to upgrade his toy piano to a larger keyboard.
When he played new melodies on the keyboard, his parents asked for the titles of the songs, assuming they were academy exercises. Mauro explained that the tunes were not taught in class but came directly from his mind and feelings, marking his earliest original compositions.

Composition methods, mathematics and physical stamina
Over his career, Mauro Lionel has written more than 200 compositions combining classical and modern registers. He writes musical notation both manually on paper and digitally, having taught himself how to use digital composition software.
One of his most celebrated pieces, titled Simple Song, was written using traditional handwritten analog notation. Another work, Fibonacci Sequence, was inspired by his interest in mathematics. Mauro explained that he views mathematics and music as deeply interconnected disciplines.
In 2025, Mauro Lionel released his debut album, titled La gesta andina. The album explores three distinct epochs of Peruvian history: the Tahuantinsuyo or Inca Empire, the Spanish Colonial era, and the Emancipation period leading to Peruvian independence.
To maintain the physical stamina required for conducting extended works like his 35-minute symphony, Mauro Lionel plays basketball. In addition to music and sports, he is a dedicated birdwatcher and ornithologist, spending time observing birds closely in natural settings.
Educational hurdles and parental support
Guillermo Malca began recording video footage of his son early in his childhood to create an audiovisual record of his natural talent. However, supporting a child prodigy has presented persistent challenges for the family.
Guillermo Malca explained that no sponsor or institution financed their family trip to London to receive the Global Child Prodigy Award. While state agencies and private entities have provided occasional assistance, the family has not received permanent financial support.
Educational infrastructure poses another hurdle, as standard music academies focus on instrumental performance rather than teaching composition to young children. After viewing videos on Mauro's YouTube channel, the Universidad Nacional de Música in Lima created two custom courses specifically tailored to his development.
Guillermo Malca stated that the family faces steep odds when organizing concerts, noting that only one door opens for every 20 doors they knock on.

Musical influences and neoclassical vision
Mauro Lionel listens to a broad spectrum of musical genres and counts Frédéric Chopin, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven among his primary influences. He stated that he feels particularly close to Mozart, who also lived as a child prodigy and musical genius from an early age.
Looking toward his future in music, Mauro Lionel expressed a desire to popularize the neoclassical style while continually refining his technical composition skills. He described a day without music as an empty day for him.
All of Mauro Lionel's musical works are available online across platforms including YouTube and Facebook, where his family maintains his official public pages.
