Fotocom Congress Expands to Peru 2027, Panama 2028

The International Congress of Photojournalism and Strategic Visual Communication, known as Fotocom, will hold its next two editions in Lima, Peru, in 2027 and Panama City, Panama, in 2028, continuing its expansion across Latin America and the Caribbean.

The announcement was made by Mayra Delgado, the congress's official spokesperson, during the closing ceremony of Fotocom 2026 on August 28 in Santo Domingo.

The second edition will take place in Lima from August 31 to September 2, 2027. Fotocom originated in the Dominican Republic with the goal of bringing together professionals, experts, students and new generations connected to photojournalism, photography, visual communication and strategic content production.

Why Peru and Panama

Delgado said the arrival in Peru and Panama is meant to widen participation among professionals from different countries and create new spaces for exchanging knowledge, experience and collaboration around imagery and new forms of communication. The expansion is also intended to connect professionals, media outlets, institutions, brands and organizations from different markets and to build a regional agenda addressing digital transformation, artificial intelligence and the growing role of images in contemporary communication.

The congress will keep its hybrid format to broaden its reach and make it easier for professionals from different countries to take part.

The 2027 edition will carry the slogan "those who understand the power of the image will lead the future of communication," with the power of the image in the digital era as its central theme.

As part of the new edition, Fotocom 2027 will present the photography exhibition "33 Dominican Covers" in Lima, showcasing historic front pages from major Dominican Republic newspapers. The exhibition aims to present events, figures and moments that have shaped the country's contemporary history, highlighting the value of print journalism and imagery as tools for preserving collective memory. It will be part of the international programming of both Fotocom 2027 and Fotocom Forum, offering Peruvian audiences and participants from other countries a window into the Dominican Republic's journalistic and visual history.

Fotocom 2026 wraps up in Santo Domingo

The first edition of Fotocom concluded on August 28 with a positive outcome, after three days of programming that brought together more than 30 national and international speakers to discuss the challenges, trends and innovations transforming photojournalism and visual communication in the digital era.

Journalists Braylin Paredes, Sue Helen Rodríguez, María Jiménez, Genesis Bravo and Daniela Pujols took part in a panel titled "Social Media and Its Impact on the Visual Consumption of News," addressing the rise in visual and digital news consumption.

Another panel, "From the Scene," brought together television reporters Julio Caraballo, Wendy Paola Sierra, Daniel Lajara and Santi Contreras, who discussed the day-to-day work of journalists chasing the news. Both panels were moderated by Daniela Pujols, a journalist with Diario Libre.

During the congress, journalist Millizen Uribe was also recognized after delivering a keynote address on women and Dominican visual memory.

Three days, more than 20 conferences

Held from August 26 to 28 in hybrid format, the congress included more than 20 specialized conferences, three discussion panels, talks, forums and networking spaces, with participation from journalists, photographers, communicators, academics, photojournalists, content creators and specialists from various fields.

The opening day took place in person on August 26 at the Auditorio Dr. Leonel Rodríguez Rib at Universidad APEC (UNAPEC) in Santo Domingo, while subsequent sessions were held virtually, allowing professionals and experts from across Latin America and the Caribbean to take part.

José Joaquín Pérez, founder, creative director and general producer of Fotocom, praised the results and highlighted participants' response to the congress's training program. He said Fotocom 2026 exceeded their expectations, and that participants especially valued the quality of the content, the caliber of the speakers and the knowledge they gained during the event. He added that this confirmed the importance of continuing to create spaces for training and exchange to strengthen photojournalism and strategic visual communication across the region.

Pérez said the results of this first edition represent a starting point for continuing to build a regional platform connecting professionals and new generations around photography, journalism, communication and new technologies.
