A 29-year-old pharmacy worker, Margarida Gama, was killed and five other young people were left in serious condition when their car swerved off the road and struck a tree near Cebolais de Cima in Castelo Branco, Portugal, early on Sunday morning.
The six friends, aged between 19 and 30, were travelling home after attending an annual festival in the neighbouring village of Retaxo when the vehicle crashed at around 4:12 am.

Gama was a resident of the city of Castelo Branco, where she worked at a local pharmacy.
Castelo Branco is a district capital located in central Portugal near the border with Spain. The municipality includes surrounding rural villages such as Retaxo and Cebolais de Cima.

Festival attendees and local futsal players
The five surviving passengers, who were all transported in serious condition to Hospital Amato Lusitano in Castelo Branco, include three women aged 20, 24, and 27, and two men aged 19 and 30.
The two injured men are futsal players for the Associação Desportiva e Recreativa de Retaxo. The sports and cultural association organized this year's Retaxo festival, where all six friends had spent the night before the crash.
Futsal is an indoor variant of association football played on a hard court, widely popular across Portugal. Local sports clubs like ADR Retaxo play a central role in organizing community celebrations and regional athletic competitions.
An atmosphere of deep grief and shock was reported at the crash site on Sunday as local residents and festival participants learned of the tragedy.

Emergency response and crash investigation
Emergency services were alerted to the accident at 4:12 am. The light passenger vehicle lost control after navigating a curve and collided with a medium-sized cork oak tree, leaving severe damage and visible collision marks on the trunk.
The cork oak, known in Portugal as a sobreiro, is a native evergreen tree species widespread across the central countryside.
A total of 26 emergency personnel were deployed to the scene, including crews from two fire departments in Castelo Branco and Covilhã, alongside responders from the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM).
INEM is Portugal's government medical agency responsible for coordinating pre-hospital emergency care, while local firefighter corps provide primary rescue and ambulance transport across the country.
All five survivors were stabilized by emergency crews before being taken to Hospital Amato Lusitano, the primary general hospital serving the Castelo Branco district.
Vehicle capacity and roadway safety concerns
Investigators from the Road Accident Investigation Nucleus of the National Republican Guard (GNR) are currently examining the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The GNR unit is focusing part of its investigation on whether the passenger car exceeded its legal seating capacity at the time of the incident.
The Guarda Nacional Republicana is Portugal's national gendarmerie force, responsible for highway patrol, traffic enforcement, and accident investigations in rural municipalities.
According to local residents, the stretch of road where the car crashed has been the site of previous severe traffic accidents, including several that resulted in fatalities.
