MapQuest became the most downloaded free application on the Apple Store after refusing to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America as requested by US President Donald Trump.
The surge in user downloads pushed the navigation application ahead of popular software including artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT and online marketplace Vinted. The achievement marks the first time MapQuest has reached the top position in the Apple App Store during its 30 years of operation since its founding in 1996.
The decision to maintain the original name for the 18,960 square kilometer body of water triggered widespread public support. MapQuest stated that it would not change the name, a stance that quickly generated hundreds of thousands of new downloads. While default settings on MapQuest preserve Lake Ontario, the application allows users the option to customize the label on their own maps if they choose.
Reaction in Canada to the name change proposal was immediate and hostile. In response to the declaration from Washington, local authorities installed a bilingual English-French sign in Hamilton, Ontario, on August 30, 2026, reading Lake Ontario Today and Forever.
Tech Rivalry and Tech Giant Response
The dispute stems from a broader political disagreement involving the northern US border. Displeased with Canada, a nation President Trump expressed a desire to treat like the 51st American state, the US leader declared that Lake Ontario would be renamed Lake America. Lake Ontario is a major body of water that straddles the international border between Canada and the United States, bounded by the province of Ontario and the state of New York.
Major tech competitors moved quickly to adopt the White House mandate. Google Maps updated its geographic database almost immediately to replace Lake Ontario with Lake America for US users. Apple followed shortly after, modifying its Apple Maps application to display the new name to users in the United States.
The swift compliance by Google drew praise from White House officials. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung promoted the update on social media platform X on August 30, sharing news of Google Maps implementing the name change.
Pattern of Geographic Renaming
MapQuest took the opposite approach to its main rivals, continuing a policy of retaining established geographical names despite presidential pronouncements. In February 2025, President Trump unilaterally renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, a directive MapQuest similarly chose not to adopt in its default mapping software.
President Trump has also recently suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz, a key international shipping route in the Middle East, to the Trump Strait. MapQuest has maintained original international place names across its digital platforms throughout these presidential requests.
The Apple App Store serves as the official mobile software distribution platform for iOS devices. As millions of users sought alternative navigation options following the mapping updates by Google and Apple, MapQuest emerged as the primary beneficiary of the public backlash against the geographical renaming.
