The campaign of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated on Friday, August 28, that photographs showing him alongside lobbyist Roberta Luchsinger do not indicate any personal, professional, or political relationship between them.
The official statement followed the widespread circulation of photos showing Lula and Luchsinger together on social media, coming just one day after the president claimed during a television interview that he had never seen the businesswoman.
In a formal note released on Friday, the Workers' Party campaign team explained that as a public figure, the president is frequently approached by members of the public for photographs during political campaigns and official events. The team emphasized that the existence of such photographic records does not signify any personal, professional, or political relationship.
The campaign issued the note to clarify comments made by Lula during an interview on Jornal Nacional, Brazil's flagship nightly news broadcast on the TV Globo network. The team stated that the intended meaning of the president's televised response was that Lula maintains no relationship with Luchsinger and has never communicated with her.
Interview questions and social media photos
During the television broadcast, journalist Renata Vasconcellos questioned the president about Luchsinger, who is under investigation by the Federal Police. Lula told the interviewer that he did not know the woman, had never seen her in his life, had never spoken to her, and that she had never been close to him.
Following the broadcast, numerous images of Lula alongside the lobbyist began spreading across social media platforms. Luchsinger had published at least ten photographs with the president on her personal profile, including several images related to the 2022 presidential campaign.
Lula, a founding leader of the left-wing Workers' Party, returned to the presidency in 2023 after winning the 2022 general election. Throughout his political career, he has engaged in extensive public campaigning across Brazil, routinely posing for photographs with local figures, candidates, and supporters.
Prior warning and political fallout
As reported by news outlet CNN Brasil, campaign advisers had previously alerted the president to the existence of the photographs. Sources close to the president stated that during a meeting with Workers' Party members from São Paulo in mid-August, Lula was shown one of the photos taken when Luchsinger was running for a seat as a state deputy.
The meeting took place at the Palácio da Alvorada, the official residence of the President of Brazil located in the federal capital, Brasília. The presidential residence frequently serves as a venue for strategic political gatherings and party discussions.
Campaign officials acknowledged that Lula's television comments created a fresh complication for his team as the images continued to circulate online. Political rivals quickly exploited the situation, with opposing presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party publishing four photos of Lula standing beside Luchsinger shortly after the interview aired.
Flávio Bolsonaro, a federal senator representing the right-wing Liberal Party, is competing against Lula in the presidential race. The Liberal Party represents the primary opposition movement in Brazilian federal politics.

Luchsinger first became publicly known as a friend of Lula's son, Fábio Luís Lula da Silva, who is commonly known as Lulinha. Both Luchsinger and Fábio Luís are under investigation by the Federal Police in connection with inquiries into alleged influence peddling. Defense lawyers for both individuals have denied any illegal actions or irregularities.
