Lord of Miracles to return to Las Nazarenas after papal Mass

The sacred image of the Señor de los Milagros will return to the Convento de las Nazarenas in Lima on Monday, November 16, following an open-air Mass presided over by Pope Leo XIV at Las Palmas Air Base.

The processional transfer will begin at 4:00 p.m. from the air base, with the image scheduled to arrive at its sanctuary at approximately 8:00 p.m. after traversing multiple districts across the capital.

In an official statement, the religious organisation behind the event invited faithful and devotees to accompany the image with faith and prayer during its return, following the Eucharistic celebration led by the pontiff.

The Señor de los Milagros, also known as the Cristo Moreno, is Peru's most prominent religious symbol. The original mural was painted in the seventeenth century on an adobe wall in Lima by an enslaved Angolan man and gained widespread veneration after remaining intact through catastrophic earthquakes in 1655, 1687 and 1746.

Today, the image rests inside the Convento de las Nazarenas, a historic sanctuary in central Lima stewarded by Nazarene Carmelite nuns. The mural is traditionally mounted upon a heavy silver litter and carried through the streets by Catholic brotherhoods during annual October processions.

Procession route through Lima

According to the religious organisation, the litter carrying the Cristo Moreno will depart Las Palmas Air Base and move through several major avenues on its journey back to the convent.

The procession will advance along Avenida Soto Bermejo, Avenida Paseo de la República, Avenida Surco, Avenida Tomás Marsano and Avenida República de Panamá. It will then continue through Avenida Canaval y Moreyra, Avenida Juan de Arona, Avenida Petit Thouars, Avenida 28 de Julio and Jirón Washington.

The final stretch of the procession will travel down Avenida Tacna, leading directly to the entrance of the Convento de las Nazarenas, where arrival is scheduled for around 8:00 p.m.

The papal journey has drawn state-level preparation across Peru. Pope Leo XIV's apostolic visit was declared an event of national interest by the Peruvian government under Supreme Resolution No. 132-2026-RE, establishing an official framework for his six-day tour across four Peruvian cities.

Official arrival and meetings in the capital

The pontiff will begin his journey on Wednesday, November 11, arriving in Lima for an official reception at the Callao Naval Air Base. He will then take part in a formal welcome ceremony at the Government Palace, where he will hold a private meeting with the President of the Republic.

Later that day, Pope Leo XIV will meet with Peruvian authorities, representatives of civil society and members of the diplomatic corps at the Grand National Theatre in Lima, where he will deliver a keynote speech.

On Thursday, November 12, the Pope will meet with the bishops of Peru before attending Midday Prayer with priests, religious figures, seminarians and synodal council members at the Cathedral Basilica of Lima. That afternoon, he will lead an open-air prayer vigil for young people and university students at the Monumental Stadium.

Travel to Chiclayo, Cusco and Pucallpa

On Friday, November 13, the Pope will travel to the northern coastal city of Chiclayo to celebrate Mass on the esplanade of the Pampas de Pimentel. During his stay in the Lambayeque region, he will hold discussions with Church leaders and university delegates, and visit the Chapel of Saint Oscar A. Romero.

On Saturday, November 14, Pope Leo XIV will preside over the coronation rite of the Immaculate Virgin at Saint Mary's Cathedral in Chiclayo, followed by a Mass in Santa Cruz de Succhabamba. He will also lead a prayer gathering to conclude the Jubilee Year of Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo, a patron saint of the Latin American episcopate.

The tour will shift south to the Andean highlands on Sunday, November 15, when the pontiff lands in Cusco. He will meet with Catholic faithful and devotion groups at the Saqsaywaman National Archaeological Park before reciting the Angelus prayer on the esplanade facing Cusco's Cathedral Basilica.

Later that day, the Pope will fly east into the Amazon basin to visit the jungle city of Pucallpa. At the Malecón Puerto Callao, he will confer with Catholic missionaries and leaders representing Amazonian indigenous peoples, before celebrating a public Mass at the Ucayali Regional Sports Village.

Care home visit and departure for Rome

Pope Leo XIV will spend the final day of his Peruvian tour, Monday, November 16, in Lima. His morning schedule begins with a pastoral visit to the shelter run by the Little Sisters of the Abandoned Elderly, where he will greet caregivers, staff members and elderly residents.

The apostolic visit will conclude with the large public Mass at Las Palmas Air Base, setting in motion the afternoon procession of the Señor de los Milagros. Following the liturgical celebration, the Pope will travel to the Callao Naval Air Base for an official farewell ceremony.

The pontiff is scheduled to board his aircraft at 1:45 p.m. at the Callao base to begin his return flight to Rome, concluding his pastoral itinerary in Peru.
