Political party La France Insoumise capitalized on growing French high school blockades as an ideal opportunity, sociologist Laurent Frajerman said on news channel LCI on Tuesday.
The wave of student mobilization around secondary schools across France continued to expand on September 29, prompting LFI figurehead Jean-Luc Mélenchon to publicly voice support for the protesting pupils and declare that his movement was proud to defend them.
Speaking in an interview on the French news channel, Frajerman provided an analysis of the political dynamics behind the school disruptions. He recalled that establishing and maintaining a structured student union inside high schools is exceptionally difficult, creating what he described as an ideal occasion for La France Insoumise to step in and align with the youth movement.
High school blockades, known in France as blocages, frequently involve students barring access to school buildings using improvised barriers. While high school activism has a long history in French politics, secondary student organizations struggle with long-term structure. Unlike adult labor unions or university bodies, high school unions face constant turnover as pupils graduate after a few years, leading to decentralized and short-lived leadership networks.
Structural challenges for student unions
Because secondary school unions lack permanent national infrastructure across campuses, political organizations often fill the organizational gap during periods of heightened pupil protest. According to Frajerman, this structural reality made the expanding high school blockades an ideal entry point for LFI to offer backing and build ties with young activists.
LFI leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon addressed the ongoing protests on Tuesday, making clear that his political movement backed the school actions. Commenting on the demonstrations, Mélenchon stated that party members were proud to stand up for and defend the nation's young people as their campus protests gathered strength.
La France Insoumise and youth activism
Founded by Mélenchon in 2016, La France Insoumise is a prominent left-wing political party in France that heavily emphasizes activist campaigns, social movement alignment, and street protests. Mélenchon, a former minister and multi-time presidential candidate, has consistently sought to position his movement alongside youth-led demonstrations and social movements across the country.
Frajerman, an academic sociologist who specializes in the study of French trade unionism, collective action, and educational policy, shared his commentary on LCI as national media tracked the spread of school disruptions.
