Kyriakos Mitsotakis Visits New School in Aspropyrgos

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the newly built 4th Junior High School of Aspropyrgos on Tuesday after students moved out of temporary prefabricated classrooms.

Around 270 students entered the modern school building in September, leaving behind prefabricated units that had been used for instruction in previous years.

During the visit, Mitsotakis toured the new school complex, entered classrooms, and spoke directly with both teachers and students.

Mitsotakis said during the tour that utilizing all available financial tools to implement a major program for upgrading school infrastructure and building new schools nationwide was a conscious choice by the government.

Regarding the start of the academic term, Mitsotakis noted that the school year had begun with fewer staff vacancies and better overall preparation. He also expressed his gratitude to educators for the work they provide.

Transition from temporary containers

The relocation carries strong local symbolism for Aspropyrgos, an industrial municipality located west of Athens. The school had operated for years in prefabricated structures where students attended daily lessons inside container units.

The temporary container classrooms had remained in active use for more than two decades, having originally been set up to house students after a major earthquake struck the region in 1999.

Construction of the replacement school complex was completed this year through funding from the Antonis Tritsis program, a Greek public investment initiative dedicated to municipal infrastructure projects.

The newly constructed building features modern bioclimatic design elements and currently accommodates the school's population of approximately 270 pupils.
