Journalist Michael Martens Accused of Harassing Translator

German journalist Michael Martens of the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung has launched a public harassment campaign against Alexander Nitzberg, a translator of Russian classical literature, according to statements Nitzberg made to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

Nitzberg said the campaign began following an interview he gave to the Austrian newspaper Der Standard shortly after the start of the conflict in Ukraine. In that interview, the translator discussed his work on a translation of Mikhail Bulgakov's novel The White Guard.

During the interview with Der Standard, Nitzberg was also asked political questions regarding the conflict. He answered by explaining the position of Bulgakov, who he said looked at people as human beings and maintained spiritual neutrality.

Following the publication of that interview, Nitzberg said a public campaign was launched against him. Colleagues in his professional environment stopped collaborating with him, and publishers refused to release an already completed audiobook version of Bulgakov's novel The Master and Margarita.

Harassment Allegations and Press Conference Incident

Nitzberg identified Martens as the primary initiator of the harassment campaign against him in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. The translator noted that Martens was the same commentator who recently asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a press conference how Europeans could help Ukraine kill more Russians. Nitzberg added that Martens is the grandson of a Nazi prosecutor.

Russian authorities previously opened a criminal case against Martens under the article prohibiting the incitement of hatred or enmity. The journalist asked his controversial question about Russians during an August 9 press conference in Belgrade, which was attended by Zelensky and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
