French left-wing leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon will make his political return on Saturday, August 22, with a live television interview on TF1 to launch his campaign for the 2027 presidential election.
Journalist Audrey Crespo-Mara will interview Mélenchon on the network's 1 p.m. news program. The broadcast comes live from the summer event of La France Insoumise in Châteauneuf-sur-Isère, where 6,000 militants and party supporters have gathered.
The appearance marks Mélenchon's first broadcast interview of the political season. It takes place three months after he used the same TF1 studio on May 3 to announce his candidacy for the Élysée Palace.
La France Insoumise, or France Unbowed, is the principal hard-left political movement in France, while TF1 is the country's largest private television broadcaster. Châteauneuf-sur-Isère is a town situated in the Drôme department in southeastern France.
Polling position and electoral strategy
Mélenchon enters the political autumn with strong momentum following his early declaration. Recent opinion polls place the La France Insoumise candidate in the lead among left-wing contenders and close to qualifying for the second round of the presidential election.
According to recent surveys, Mélenchon trails slightly behind former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe and behind National Rally figure Marine Le Pen in overall standings.
His television appearance comes as rival left-wing forces struggle to reach an agreement to field a unified presidential candidate. While Mélenchon relies on unanimous support from his own party, he must expand his electoral base.
To widen his appeal, the candidate is reaching out to the Ecologists and seeking to persuade business circles ahead of upcoming campaign events.
Upcoming candidate debate
As part of his efforts to convince economic leaders, Mélenchon will participate in a live debate on news channel LCI on August 27 at 4:45 p.m.
The debate will take place during La REF, the annual summer gathering hosted by France's main business federation, MEDEF. He will appear alongside several other declared and prospective candidates for the 2027 presidential vote.
