English footballer Harvey Elliott arrived in Spain on Monday night to complete a loan transfer to Valencia CF from Premier League club Liverpool FC.
The 23-year-old attacking midfielder landed at Manises airport, near the city of Valencia, to undergo his medical examination on Tuesday before signing his contract with the Spanish team. The deal is a loan agreement without an option for Valencia to purchase the player permanently.
Negotiations between the two clubs accelerated over the weekend as Valencia sought to finalize terms. The primary point of discussion during the talks involved the division of Elliott's wages between Liverpool and Valencia. Complete agreement between all parties was reached during the day on Monday.
Player reactions and positional role
Speaking upon his arrival at Manises airport, Elliott expressed gratitude for the opportunity to join Valencia, describing the Spanish side as an incredible club. He said that everything had progressed very quickly and noted that he had been waiting for the call to finalize the move.
Elliott stated that he hoped to help return Valencia to European competition. Regarding his role on the pitch, he explained that while he will play wherever requested by the coaching staff, he is most effective operating as a central attacking midfielder in the number 10 position.
Background and previous loan spell
Elliott is a two-time European Under-21 champion with England and has built a reputation as a precocious talent in English football. He spent the previous campaign on loan at Premier League side Aston Villa, where he made nine appearances under manager Unai Emery.
His playing time at Villa Park was restricted due to a clause in his contract stipulating that Aston Villa would be obliged to exercise a mandatory purchase option if he played a tenth match. As a result, Elliott was left out of the team for the remainder of the season. Emery later issued a public apology to the player at the end of the campaign regarding how the situation was handled.
Valencia squad plans and transfer deadline
Valencia's move for Elliott comes amid wider squad adjustments at Mestalla ahead of the transfer deadline. The Spanish club is also attempting to secure a new striker following a serious injury to forward Umar Sadiq, who faces several months on the sidelines.
To register further incoming signings, Valencia need to complete a player departure before the window closes. Midfielder André Almeida has been identified as the most likely candidate to leave, although a deal remains complex. The requirement to sell is driven by financial controls and La Liga financial fair play limits, alongside internal spending caps set by club ownership Meriton Holdings, rather than registration roster space.
