A wildfire burning for a third consecutive day near Porto Germeno in western Attica has destroyed homes and left residents without shelter, with firefighting forces continuing efforts to contain active fronts.
One local resident, speaking to OPEN television, described losing his home and his anxiety over animals he was forced to leave behind during the evacuation. He said he learned his house had been completely destroyed from a neighbour, as authorities were not allowing access to the affected area.
The man said a bulldozer had been clearing a road when his house burned at around 3:30 in the morning, despite five fire engines being present outside. He had been living there since 2006, when he retired, and said the roof had collapsed. He was staying with his children while waiting for the road to reopen.
Beyond his home, the resident expressed deep concern for his animals, saying he had not had time to move them because the fire spread so quickly. He said he had chickens and dogs at the property and did not know what had become of them.
He said he feared the fire would only end once it had burned everything in its path. Firefighting forces were continuing efforts to limit the blaze and protect nearby settlements.
