Frank Beard, the long-time drummer for the American rock band ZZ Top, has died at the age of 77 at his ranch in Richmond, Texas.
Beard passed away on Monday, August 17, while under hospice care with his family by his side. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
ZZ Top announced his death in a statement, with guitarist and vocalist Billy Gibbons paying tribute to his close friend and colleague. Gibbons described Beard as one of the most innovative drummers of his generation, emphasizing that his signature rhythm played a decisive role in shaping the band's sound.
The drummer had experienced health issues in recent months. He temporarily stepped away from touring with ZZ Top in March 2025 and missed several performances during 2026. Just last week, the band cancelled a scheduled show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles due to his health problems.
More than five decades with ZZ Top
Beard joined ZZ Top in 1969 and was instrumental in creating the band's classic lineup. He recommended that Billy Gibbons try out bassist Dusty Hill, establishing the trio that would perform together for more than 50 years until Hill died in 2021.
ZZ Top achieved international fame by combining blues, rock, and boogie music. Their biggest hit tracks included La Grange, Sharp Dressed Man, Legs, and Gimme All Your Lovin'. The band sold over 50 million records worldwide and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
Beard was also famous as an ironic exception to ZZ Top's iconic appearance. While his bandmates were instantly recognizable for their long chest-length beards, the drummer, despite his surname, was usually the only member of the group without a long beard.
Tour schedule following drummer's death
Following his passing, ZZ Top cancelled their next two scheduled concerts. However, the group confirmed that they will continue their ongoing tour, stating that this was what Beard himself had wished.
