Investigators in Moscow have solved the killing of a woman and her daughter 11 years after the crime, Investigative Committee spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko told Lenta.ru.
Investigators say a foreign national, Alexei Melnichuk, who was 22 at the time, broke into an apartment on Shabolovka Street on the night of February 14, 2015, intending to steal from it. The homeowner caught him in the act, and fearing exposure, he beat her and then stabbed her 22 times. He also attacked her young daughter, stabbing her 16 times. The girl did not survive.
Melnichuk then tried to wipe away evidence, stole jewelry worth 568,000 rubles and fled, according to investigators.
Identified years later
Investigators say they only identified him years later through fingerprints found on a chest of drawers at the scene. He turned out to be a foreign national already listed in a registry of people under migration-law violations.
Melnichuk has confessed to the crime and will soon appear in court, investigators said.
