Firefighters Battle All-Night Blazes in Attica-Boeotia and Fokida

Greek firefighters are conducting overnight ground operations at two major fire fronts in Attica-Boeotia and Skaloma, Fokida, according to the deputy spokesperson of the Fire Service, Yannis Artopoios, speaking to public broadcaster ERT on Saturday evening.

Artopoios said the most difficult fronts near Porto Germeno are threatening the areas of Agia Paraskevi and Agios Nektarios from the east, and Mytikas and Psatha from the southwest.

In Fokida, he said the most critical points are at Peukaki and Eupalio, where flames continue to advance.

A temporary easing of winds allowed more than 30 aircraft and helicopters to carry out targeted drops during daylight hours, but aerial operations ceased at sunset, leaving ground forces to continue alone.

In Boeotia, nearly 500 firefighters and 22 forest commando units are engaged in what Artopoios described as an operation of enormous scale. He noted that evacuation of residents in the Porto Germeno area was prioritised from the start, and that strong winds had prevented rapid containment of the fire.

Forces at both fronts remain on full alert, with operations continuing until first light, when aircraft are expected to rejoin the effort.
