Fidias Panayiotou, a Cypriot member of the European Parliament, drew criticism after attending an official memorial event for Tasos Isaac and Solomos Solomou wearing shorts and sneakers.
Panayiotou took part in the ceremony in his capacity as the leader of a political party. He stood in the front row of officials beside President Nikos Christodoulides, alongside the rest of the country's political, military and church leadership. The event marked 30 years since the killings of Isaac and Solomou.
Criticism of the appearance
His choice of clothing was not well received. It was seen as an insult both to the two men and to their families, who were present at the ceremony.
Communication experts said Panayiotou had once again succeeded in turning an official event into a personal show, shifting attention away from the memory of the two men's sacrifice and onto himself and his clothing choices.
