A 35-year-old driver who hit 16 people on Rua da Oura in Albufeira, Portugal, while driving with a criminal blood alcohol level of 1.29 grams per litre has been remanded in pre-trial detention.
Fábio Yesson Nunes, a dual Angolan and Portuguese citizen who works as a mechanic near Paris, France, was ordered into custody on Thursday following questioning at the Albufeira court.
Authorities transferred Nunes to Silves prison, a low-security facility housing around 80 inmates in the Algarve region. Correio da Manhã reported that neither the court nor the Prison Services have issued orders for a short-term transfer.
Nunes was visiting Albufeira on holiday when the incident occurred. When residing in Portugal, he maintains a home in the municipality of Odivelas, near Lisbon.
In France, Nunes has been operating an auto repair shop in the Paris area since at least January of this year.
Charges and victim injuries
Prosecutors have formally indicted Nunes on charges including attempted aggravated murder, dangerous driving, driving without a license, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
He is also charged with resistance and coercion against an official, aggravated disobedience, and document forgery.
The incident left 16 people injured on the street, including two officers from the National Republican Guard (GNR).
Only two of the victims remain hospitalized. One of them, a 20-year-old woman residing in Luxembourg, remains in guarded condition.
Police investigation into motivation
Portugal's criminal investigation agency, the Polícia Judiciária, has launched a detailed review into the driver's life and employment background.
Investigators are analyzing his background to determine the underlying motivation for the crash on Rua da Oura.
Albufeira is a coastal city in the southern Algarve region of Portugal, widely known as a major tourist destination.
