“One Hundred Years of Solitude” is a classic of world literature. The novel by Colombian Gabriel Garcia Marquez, for which the writer received the Nobel Prize in 1972, is one of those works that for years was considered untranslatable into film. Netflix, however, took up the gauntlet and “One Hundred Years of Solitude” will be adapted into a 16-episode series.
Netflix. Marquez’s “One Hundred Years of Solitude” will be released on the platform
The series is Spanish-language and was created in cooperation with Marquez’s sons. Netflix bought the rights to the film adaptation only after the death of the writer, who throughout his life did not decide to entrust the work to any production company. Only his sons – Rogrigo Garcia and Gonzalo Garcia Barcha – decided that the time and opportunity had come for “One Hundred Years of Solitude” to finally hit the screens.
For decades, our father was skeptical about selling the rights to “One Hundred Years of Solitude.” He believed that an ordinary film would be too short to adapt the novel, and producing it in a language other than Spanish was out of the question. But today, in the golden era of TV series, with the support of such talented writers and directors, with almost cinematic quality and international audiences’ acceptance of foreign-language works – the timing couldn’t be better – explained one of the sons in an interview with the Guardian in 2019.
The production of the series was delayed due to the global pandemic. Now, however, Netflix has shown a trailer of the finished work. The series will hit the platform in the second half of this year.
What is “One Hundred Years of Solitude” about?
“One Hundred Years of Solitude” written in the style of magical realism tells the story of the Buendia family from the town of Macondo. Their fate is interwoven with the true history of South America and with magical events that affect all members of the family. Marquez used references to the history of Colombia (civil war), events described in the Bible, fairy tales, local legends, but also ordinary human longings. The multitude of plots and fantastic events involving different people with the same names for generations can be a hard nut to crack for the creators of the series.
