Arequipa: price of bread could rise to 3 units for one sol from next week

The president of the Arequipa Bakers Association, Freddy Prieto, reported that the price of bread could rise from next week to the value of three units for one sol. He argued as a cause increase in the price of wheat flour.

Prieto, in a conversation with La República, said that the increase in the cost of flour would be due to international factors, since there are lower production as a consequence of the pandemic. He maintained that more than 80% of wheat flour is imported.

In addition, he indicated that it will depend on each baker Rise the price. In his particular case, he said that from next week he will apply the formula of three loaves for one sol, since the supplies purchased at the previous price are already gone.

He added that this change in the cost of bread would be mainly in the formal bakers, who pay a differentiated rate for electricity. He considers that informal producers, who pay a value for domestic electricity, can maintain their sales without raising the price.

The bread of three points or the one of wheatbreads for popular consumption in Arequipa, would be the most affected by the rise. It should be noted that previously the price of bread already suffered an increase. With this there would be two in less than a year.

Prieto reported that the daily consumption of bread per person is four units. Finally, he suggested to the central government exempt from the IGV tax on bread so that the rise does not affect consumers.
