BCRP: Velarde insists Congress with the election of technical profiles for his board of directors

The president of the Central Reserve Bank (BCRP), Julio Velarde, reiterated the need to elect three technical profiles to integrate the directory of the highest issuing entity from the Congress of the Republic. The last time Rafael Rey, José Chlimper and Elmer Cuba were elected.

As part of his presentation at CADE 2021, the head of the BCRP explained that inflation will be one of the most important challenges for the Government “for a good part of next year”, in what he considered an international phenomenon “not so difficult to control ”.

“The highest inflation has been in food and energy and it hurts the poorest, but it responds to external factors. Even if the BCRP raises the interest rate to 500%, the price of oil is not going to fall ”, he explained.

Along these lines, Velarde pointed out that the technical election of the last three directors of the BCRP, by Parliament, would represent an important step for the monetary policies required by the country in this difficult context.

“In this case, for inflation, it is not that important. Now his turn is to appoint the directors, if qualified people are appointed. It has to be ideal and I think that would help a lot ”, he sent.

On the other hand, he highlighted the urgency of improving both public spending and the appointments of its responsible officials. He recommended, thus, that regional and municipal governments also apply the civil service, in such a way that people with “higher qualifications are chosen and that it is not simply a political favor.”

“It is a difficult process. I have seen many proposals that have been made, including reducing the number of districts, removing some attributions that regional governments have at the moment, but it is not my issue, the truth is that it is not working well and something has to be done, “he concluded. .
