Russia Launches New Missile Attack on Kyiv

Russia launched a new missile attack on Kyiv shortly after midnight, an AFP journalist on the ground reported hearing at least ten explosions in the Ukrainian capital.

The strikes came after Ukraine's air force issued an alert warning of incoming Russian ballistic missiles.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said air defenses were operating and confirmed that Kyiv and its region were under ballistic missile attack. He said at least one non-residential building had been hit in one of the city's districts.

Ukraine's military command said the threat level remained high and urged residents to stay in shelters.

Rising civilian toll

Ukraine and Russia have been exchanging long-range strikes with growing intensity in recent weeks, and the number of civilian casualties has been rising, according to the report.

Ukraine's military has stepped up raids on Russian civilian infrastructure, targeting mainly hydrocarbon and supply facilities. Russia's military, meanwhile, continues to bomb Ukrainian cities on an almost nightly basis.
