Russia Strikes Kyiv With Ballistic Missiles, 12 Injured

Russian forces launched a ballistic missile attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight on 5 August, setting off dozens of explosions in the capital, the Kyiv City Military Administration and Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.

The number of people hurt in the attack rose to 12, officials said. The city administration reported that one woman was killed and five others were wounded, and medics hospitalized three victims, one of them in serious condition.

Explosions began around 12:20 a.m. local time, with at least several dozen powerful blasts recorded across the city and region.

Damage across Kyiv oblast

The Kyiv Oblast Military Administration said the attack's effects were recorded in the Bucha, Brovary and Fastiv districts. Officials said there were injured among civilians, that medics were working at the sites, that all victims were receiving necessary aid, and that the number of injured was still being clarified. Warehouse and production buildings were damaged in Brovary district, and warehouse buildings were damaged in Bucha and Fastiv districts.

Rescue operation and ammonia leak in Kyiv

In Kyiv's Holosiivskyi district, rescuers pulled two people from the rubble of a collapsed warehouse building, and Klitschko said more people could still be trapped as a search and rescue operation continued. A private residential building in the district was also damaged, with people possibly under the rubble. A strike on a non-residential building nearby caused an ammonia leak from a system holding about 300 liters of the substance; rescuers contained the leak and officials said there was no threat to the public. Repeated explosions at one location damaged an ambulance and injured its driver.

Klitschko reported a large fire in non-residential premises in the Kyiv-Sviatoshynskyi district. Fires also broke out in a 20-story residential building and warehouse facilities in the Obolonskyi district, at another building and warehouses at two addresses, and in a warehouse in the Desnianskyi district, where missile debris fell near a residential building. An office building in Obolonskyi district was preliminarily reported hit, and warehouse structures burned in the Sviatoshynskyi district.

Kyiv issued an air raid alert over the threat of ballistic weapons. Klitschko's Telegram channel reported air defense activity over the city, though UNIAN correspondents said they neither heard nor observed it; it has previously been reported that Ukraine currently lacks the means to intercept ballistic missiles.

The strike followed a Russian missile attack on a suburb of Odesa on 4 August that wounded people near a market, according to Oleh Kiper, head of the Odesa Oblast Military Administration, who said the enemy had cynically struck a crowded area near the market with missiles.
