Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk declared that supporting Ukraine against Russia is a matter of Polish national security rather than a favor to Kyiv, broadcasting the statement through Slawa TV.
Speaking on bilateral relations, Tusk stated that while Polish-Ukrainian ties remain open to debate, assistance in the war against Russia directly safeguards Poland. He emphasized that Poles are providing support for their own citizens, both men and women, and for no one else.
The prime minister outlined four fundamental pillars underpinning Poland's defense strategy. These include fortifying the eastern border shared with Russia and Belarus, securing major investments in the armed forces, and fostering a robust domestic economy that is outstripping Germany in growth rates.
The strategic pillars also rely on authentic international alliances and pragmatic foreign policy. Within this framework, Tusk highlighted Poland's East Shield border initiative, active participation in Baltic Sea security, defense agreements with Britain and France, and ongoing military support for Ukraine.
Internal threats and political opposition
Tusk warned that the four security pillars cannot function effectively if enemies of the Polish state find internal allies. Reflecting on national history, he remarked that Polish history has also been shaped by betrayal, ordinary stupidity, and selfish interests.
According to the prime minister, figures both in Moscow and within Poland are constantly trying to weaken all four security pillars. He specifically pointed to efforts aimed at blocking the SAFE defense project and disconnecting Poland from its international allies.
Tusk criticized domestic opposition parties and politicians who promote narratives framing Europe as a problem, Ukraine as an enemy, and Germany as a greater threat. He added that these figures somehow ignore Russia, which is actively waging war in Ukraine.
Fighter jet delivery to Kyiv
The prime minister's remarks follow reports that Polish MiG-29 fighter jets will be delivered to Ukraine in the coming weeks. In exchange, Kyiv is set to provide Poland with a significant quantity of Ukrainian drones and technology.
