United States President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday to prevent birth tourism. The practice involves foreign women travelling to give birth in the country so their children automatically receive United States citizenship.
Birthright citizenship is guaranteed by the United States Constitution. The Supreme Court of the United States struck down an executive order from Trump in June that attempted to restrict that right.
White House Legal Position
The White House now argues that the decision by the highest court still allows restricting citizenship for specific groups. According to the White House, those limits apply to children of foreign mothers entering for maternity tourism, diplomatic personnel, people classified as foreign terrorists, and individuals born in unincorporated territories such as Puerto Rico.
