U.S. officials quietly evacuated President Donald Trump from Turkey in a catering truck on July 8 following a credible Iranian threat against Air Force One. Trump had walked up the steps of the presidential aircraft on camera after a NATO summit in Ankara, but he was taken out through a secondary exit while the main plane took off as a decoy with journalists and White House staff on board.
The secret maneuver moved Trump to a U.S. Air Force C-32A aircraft while the original plane departed without him. The Washington Post first reported the operation, which Reuters later confirmed with American authorities.
Decoy operation in Ankara
Military analyst and defense expert Guillermo Pacheco said a credible threat fundamentally changes presidential security objectives. Pacheco told Spanish newspaper La Razon that protection teams must focus on keeping the president's location secret and preventing adversaries from predicting his movements.
U.S. officials have tracked Tehran's plots against American leaders since the 2020 killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani. However, the risk increased significantly following the outbreak of the 2026 war with Iran.
Trump acknowledged that Iranian plots to assassinate him influenced his decisions during the conflict. Addressing the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Trump told ABC News that he had caught the Iranian leader before the leader could catch him.
Domestic security vulnerabilities
Recent security decisions also reflect lessons learned from past assassination attempts on American soil. Trump survived a shooting in July 2024 during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a bullet grazed his ear.
A second assassination attempt occurred two months later at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. Both events forced the Secret Service to overhaul security protocols and strengthen protective perimeters around the president.
Pacheco noted that domestic threats often originate from isolated individuals or small groups. He said such attacks are difficult to anticipate due to minimal advance planning, noting that past attempts exposed vulnerabilities in physical security and perimeter monitoring near public appearances.
Changes to presidential aircraft
Security concerns have extended to the main presidential aircraft itself. Trump traveled to Turkey aboard a Boeing 747-8 delivered by Qatar that had been rapidly retrofitted for presidential operations.
The aircraft, valued at hundreds of millions of dollars, faced scrutiny regarding whether communications, defense, and protective systems were properly integrated. Following doubts about its defensive capabilities, Trump announced in July that the plane would be temporarily grounded for security upgrades while he returns to using older presidential models.
Reports confirmed that the threat detected in Turkey specifically targeted the presidential aircraft, making the decoy switch necessary to hide which plane carried the commander in chief.
White House underground facilities
Physical security upgrades have also drawn attention to underground structures beneath the White House. Ongoing construction of a new ballroom promoted by Trump has refocused interest on subterranean military installations under the presidential complex.
Trump has publicly discussed building a large military complex beneath the grounds, though specific details and capabilities of the facility remain classified.
While U.S. officials have not linked the White House construction directly to the Iranian threat, the work coincides with a broader expansion of presidential protection. The war with Iran has reshaped security protocols, affecting everything from Air Force One travel to secret transit measures.
