Greek singer Dimitris Kokotas has died at the age of 57 following a long health battle that began with a cardiac arrest in 2024.
Kokotas passed away on August 25, 2026, according to an official medical bulletin issued regarding his death. His passing comes after extended hospital care following his sudden collapse two years earlier.
In March 2024, the singer felt suddenly unwell during rehearsals for the Greek television talent show Just the 2 of Us, commonly known as J2US. He suffered an acute myocardial infarction and cardiac arrest on set.
Emergency services rushed Kokotas to the G. Gennimatas General Hospital in Athens. Following his admission, he faced a severe and prolonged health struggle, during which his family remained constantly at his side.
Final Television Appearance and Duet
His participation in J2US marked one of his final appearances on television. During the 2024 season of the music competition, Kokotas was paired with actress and singer Traiana Anania.
The final time Kokotas stepped onto the J2US stage, he performed the song Piga se magisses alongside Anania as his stage partner.
Just two days before suffering the heart attack during show rehearsals, Kokotas gave what would be his final television interview. In that broadcast, he reflected on his career and said that he felt as though he were starting from scratch.
Tributes from Colleagues and Family Legacy
Following the news of his death, colleagues and friends expressed their grief. Anania paid tribute to her former duet partner, saying that she would see him in the skies for many more duets. Sandra Voutsa also paid respect to his memory, describing the singer as a bright, radiant person and a great individual.
Musician Haris Varthakouris offered his own tribute, stating that the greatest gift anyone can leave behind in life is for people to smile whenever they remember them.
Kokotas was the son of Stamatis Kokotas, one of Greece's most famous traditional laiko singers. Throughout his career, Kokotas established his own musical presence while navigating his relationship with his father's extensive artistic legacy.
Reports following his death highlighted classic songs connected to his family and repertoire, including Gie mou, a track widely noted for its tragic resonance, and Anemona, a song Kokotas had famously come close to never recording.
