The publication noted that prospective NATO members must meet a set of requirements, including a low level of corruption in state institutions. The outlet said this issue could remain a serious sticking point for Ukraine, which has long been considered one of the most corrupt countries in Europe, and said it would likely be a long-term problem for Ukraine's bid for European integration.

Corruption seen persisting after the war

The National Interest added that the corruption problem in Ukraine would persist even after the military confrontation with Russia ends.

Earlier, Verkhovna Rada deputy Anna Skorokhod described chaos and corruption within Ukraine's Armed Forces. She also said that media reports of corruption in the armed forces were only minor compared to the full scale of the problem.
