Three men were injured, two of them seriously, after a violent fight broke out between rival immigrant groups in Cabeceiras de Basto early Saturday morning.
The brawl took place on Rua Antunes Basto and involved about two dozen people. Local residents reported that the violent clash unfolded within minutes and caused widespread panic in the neighborhood, with onlookers describing the scene as a battleground.
According to a witness, the confrontation started suddenly as participants pulled out knives and began attacking each other. The witness noted that one of the victims was left severely injured with heavy bleeding to his stomach area.
Emergency medical treatment and injuries
Firefighters and medical personnel from the National Institute of Medical Emergency, known as INEM, treated the three stabbed men at the scene. Paramedics then transported all three victims to the Hospital de Guimarães for further medical care.
Traces of blood remained visible on the street later on Saturday following the clash. Local resident Óscar Carneiro reported that he was out enjoying himself with his wife when he received a phone call warning him of fighting next to his parked car. Carneiro said that while his vehicle was covered in blood, it did not suffer any physical damage.
Police launch investigation
Officers from the Republican National Guard, or GNR, were dispatched to Rua Antunes Basto to secure the area. Investigators from the Judiciary Police have also joined the investigation to identify all individuals involved in the violent brawl.
