Borja Bandera says muscle mass reveals biological age

Medical specialist in endocrinology and nutrition Borja Bandera has stated that muscle mass and physical function offer a clearer view of biological aging than wrinkles.

The Spanish specialist explained in a video published on February 3, 2023, that examining muscle tissue provides key insights into how the body ages beyond outward cosmetic appearance. Bandera noted that while facial line patterns show a visible record of time, they reveal little about a person's physical ability to climb stairs, carry heavy bags, or stand up from the floor.

Bandera clarified that his statement serves as an educational illustration rather than a clinical metric that calculates an exact age from biceps size or a single photograph. He emphasized that individuals can build muscle mass at 40, 50, 60, 70, and even 80 years of age.

Although physiological responses change with advancing age and baseline health, the human body's capacity to adapt does not disappear at a specific numerical milestone. Progress depends on structured physical training, proper diet, adequate rest, and any pre-existing medical conditions.

Las arrugas no son un signo que mida verdaderamente lo viejo que es alguien, afecta mucho, por ejemplo, el sol
Wrinkles are not a true measure of how old someone is, as factors like sun exposure have a major impact.

Endocrinology focuses on hormones and metabolic health, fields directly tied to how muscles regulate energy and maintain physical autonomy. Age-related muscle loss, medically known as sarcopenia, can gradually reduce mobility and independence if resistance exercise is not maintained throughout adult life.

Muscle Function and Biological Aging

Skeletal muscle assists with daily movement and force production while storing essential proteins and participating in glucose metabolism. As people grow older, muscle mass can decline, and physical strength often decreases at an even faster rate.

Bandera highlighted that functional capacity matters just as much as muscle volume. Two individuals who look similar in physical size may possess vastly different capabilities when walking, gripping objects, or standing up.

Because of this variation, assessing muscular aging extends beyond standard bathroom scales. Healthcare professionals evaluate grip strength, walking speed, the ease of standing from a seated position, and overall body composition to gain an accurate picture.

No single isolated measurement provides a complete diagnostic assessment. Commercial digital platforms such as Google Health aggregate metrics including step counts, sleep duration, and heart rate readings, while consumer devices attempt to estimate body composition.

Smart consumer wearables like the Google Fitbit Air can log daily activity patterns and rest, but they cannot diagnose clinical sarcopenia. Domestic health estimations are useful for tracking personal trends over time rather than establishing a definitive medical biological age. In addition, smartwatch stress readings have shown discrepancies when compared with how users actually felt.

Strength Training and Advanced Age

Progressive strength training remains the primary stimulus for building muscle in older adults. Training can be performed using gym machines, free weights, resistance bands, or bodyweight exercises, provided the muscles experience sufficient resistance and adequate recovery time.

Making progress in resistance training does not require adding heavier weights every day. Improvements can also take the form of better movement control, expanding the range of motion, or completing additional repetitions with stable technique.

Proper nutrition must provide adequate overall energy and protein intake to support muscle maintenance. Nutritional requirements vary between individuals and must be adjusted for specific medical situations, such as kidney disease, swallowing difficulties, or involuntary weight loss.

Health tracking rings can provide helpful data regarding sleep quality and vital signs, but Bandera stressed that they cannot replace professional nutritional evaluations. Anyone managing an underlying illness should establish a health plan in consultation with qualified healthcare professionals.

Functional Capacity Over Aesthetics

Bandera emphasized the importance of separating muscular health from cosmetic appearance. An individual can significantly improve muscle strength and physical function without experiencing dramatic visual changes in front of a mirror.

The most meaningful indicators of progress appear during ordinary daily tasks. Key benchmarks include standing up with less physical support, carrying grocery bags securely, enduring longer walks without fatigue, and quickly regaining stability after a stumble.

Evaluating muscle health focuses on real physical capacity rather than chasing a specific body image or assigning an arbitrary age number. Facial wrinkles will continue to mark the years a person has lived, but muscular strength, power, and movement demonstrate what that person can accomplish today.
