Barcelona Province to Modernise Bookmobile Network with EU Funds

The Diputació de Barcelona is set to modernise its bookmobile network through a project called Bibliobús+, which aims to strengthen public reading services in the province’s least populated municipalities using more sustainable vehicles and improved access points.

The project carries a total budget of 3,433,000 euros. It has secured a grant of 1,373,200 euros from the European Regional Development Fund under the Catalonia ERDF Programme 2021-2027, co-financed by the European Union. The EU grant covers 40 percent of the total cost, with the Diputació de Barcelona contributing the remaining 2,059,800 euros.

The initiative will benefit at least 28 municipalities in the Barcelona area where, in many cases, the bookmobile is the only public cultural facility with a regular presence.

The main action under the project is the replacement of five vehicles that have exceeded their useful life. The renewal will not expand the number of lines but will ensure continuity of the existing service with safer and more efficient vehicles.

The new fleet will include four large bookmobiles for the Cavall Bernat, Guilleries, Montnegre and Puigdon lines, a new light vehicle for the Serra del Cadí line, and the conversion of the Pedraforca bookmobile to LPG. The new vehicles will meet European standards for clean vehicles and will include updated interior fittings, furniture and technology.
