Avgerinos Mocks Karystianou Amid Party Turmoil

Journalist Thanasis Avgerinos, who was expelled from the Greek party Elpida gia ti Dimokratia, hit back at leader Maria Karystianou with a sarcastic social media post after the party accused him and others of trying to seize its leadership.

Avgerinos posted a video that altered a photo of a holiday van he had used in an earlier post about what he called "planted advisers," turning the vehicle into an ambulance.

He captioned it sarcastically as a "revelation" that the real plan had been an abduction, not merely a seizure of the leadership, and said it was averted at the last minute by the intervention of a top behind-the-scenes figure.

Party statement

The party's Political Council issued a statement describing an attempted internal takeover of the movement and accusing certain actors of trying to usurp and split what it called a pure movement. The statement said the moves abolished any notion of political ethics and blamed what it called the fury of hidden interests working through underground processes.

New wave of departures

The same day, Katerina Moutsatsou, Maria Ioannidou and Takis Kotsorgios announced their departures from the party, adding to the string of exits and public disputes that have marked the movement's recent internal crisis.
