Russia also commemorates the 1714 naval battle at Cape Gangut on the Hanko Peninsula in the Gulf of Finland. A Christian priest invited Panteleimon into his home after watching him walk past, leading Panteleimon to accept baptism after discussing Christian theology.
Panteleimon gained a reputation for healing sickness through prayer. Jealous physicians reported him to Maximian, who tried to force Panteleimon to renounce Christianity. After Panteleimon repeatedly refused, Maximian ordered his torture and execution by beheading. Church legend states that milk flowed with blood from his wound, and the olive tree he was tied to bloomed and produced healing fruit.
