Apple has unveiled an updated Mac Studio compact desktop line powered by its new M5 Max and M5 Ultra silicon chips. The updated professional desktop features faster storage technology, enhanced wireless connectivity, and next-generation expansion ports.

Pricing for the new Mac Studio begins at $2,500 for the base configuration equipped with the M5 Max processor. The higher-tier variant powered by the flagship M5 Ultra chip starts at $5,500, with official sales scheduled to begin on September 22.

The flagship M5 Ultra processor stands as Apple's most powerful custom chip to date. According to the company, the chip features up to 36 central processing unit cores and 80 graphics processing unit cores, delivering multithreaded performance up to 1.3 times faster than the previous M3 Ultra generation, while graphics performance improves by up to 40 percent.

Memory capacity and artificial intelligence

The M5 Ultra configuration supports up to 512 GB of unified memory with data bandwidth reaching up to 1.2 TB per second. Apple stated that this memory capacity enables the computer to run large language models containing hundreds of billions of parameters directly on the machine. Users can also connect multiple Mac Studio systems together into a computing cluster using Thunderbolt 5 ports.

Unified memory is a high-bandwidth hardware architecture that allows the central processor and graphics engine to share a single memory pool without copying data across a traditional bus. This unified structure is critical for artificial intelligence applications, which require rapid access to massive datasets stored in memory during training and inference tasks.

The M3 Ultra was Apple's previous flagship desktop chip, combining two M3 Max dies using proprietary high-speed interconnect technology. The M5 Ultra continues this design philosophy, scaling CPU and GPU core counts to deliver higher compute density for demanding workstation applications.

M5 Max specifications and hardware upgrades

The lower-tier Mac Studio model features the M5 Max chip, which offers up to 40 graphics processing unit cores. This configuration supports up to 128 GB of unified memory and internal solid-state drive storage options reaching up to 8 TB.

Both Mac Studio models include upgraded connectivity standards across the board. The machines feature solid-state drives built on the PCIe Gen 6 protocol for faster file transfers, alongside Thunderbolt 5 connectivity capable of throughput speeds up to 120 Gbps. Wireless connections receive upgrades to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 standards.

Thunderbolt 5 represents a significant speed increase over Thunderbolt 4, doubling standard bidirectional data bandwidth to 80 Gbps and enabling up to 120 Gbps for bandwidth-intensive video and display outputs. PCIe Gen 6 double-rates the throughput of Gen 5 storage, reducing file loading times for high-resolution media creation.

Desktop lineup context and release schedule

First introduced in 2022, the Mac Studio is a compact desktop workstation designed by Apple to fit between the portable MacBook Pro laptops and the modular Mac Pro desktop system. It caters primarily to software developers, video editors, 3D animators, and data scientists who require heavy computational power without a massive desktop footprint.

The announcement comes amid broader news regarding Apple's hardware roadmap, including reported cyberattack disclosures involving supply chain partners for upcoming iPhone models and potential display cost adjustments for future smartphones.

Retail sales for the new Mac Studio lineup open on September 22. Apple confirmed that the top-spec configuration featuring 512 GB of unified memory will become available to buyers at the end of October.
